Last Friday, the CFN announced a new project aimed at aiding CFN members who want to work to reform their campuses. CFN Members are encouraged to request copies of FIRE's new Correcting Common Mistakes in Campus Speech Policies, which is designed to highlight the types of constitutionally infirm policies that FIRE sees all the time. While supplies last, each student that requests a copy and promises to deliver it to a college administrator will receive a copy of the handbook. In addition to the handbook, students will receive information about their school's speech policies, if the school is listed in Spotlight. Students can then schedule a meeting with the college president or other administrator, give them the handbook, and use it as an opportunity to talk about policies at their school that need to be revised to conform with either the Constitution or the school's own commitment to free speech. Once they have their meeting, students will fill out a brief form to let us know how the meeting went and discuss the next steps for their reform campaign. As an added incentive, all of these activism activities will earn them points in the CFN's incentive program. Each student that successfully meets with a relevant college administrator and gives them a copy of the handbook will earn 25 points. Students who turn in a photo of the event will earn an additional 10 points.
The campaign has only just started and even with a holiday looming near, several students have already signed on. Above is a map of those schools where CFN members have already requested copies.
